Why do Patients Want a Labiaplasty?
Women who choose aesthetic vaginal rejuvenation do so for a variety of reasons, many of which include the following:
- Changes to the labia post-pregnancy and childbirth
- After aging creates loose labial tissue
- To correct a genetic excess in labial tissue
- To feel confident in swimsuits and intimate relationships
Regardless of their aesthetic concern, all our labiaplasty patients want to feel comfortable and confident. Excess tissue in this area can make patients feel embarrassed when wearing a swimsuit or tight-fitting pair of jeans and can even hamper their sexual life. This treatment provides a significant boost in patients’ body confidence and can also enhance sensitivity in intimate moments.
What Happens During Your Labiaplasty Procedure?
During the treatment, the labia minora and labia majora can be addressed. For some patients, it may be necessary only to treat excess tissue in one area. The surgical methods used depends on your preferences and the concerns you have expressed during your discussion with our office. Dr. Stephan offers the following techniques:
The trim method, also called the linear process, is a widely used method of aesthetically improving the vaginal area. The excess tissue is precisely removed, and the incision spans the length of the labia minora. However, the resulting scar is very well hidden and not apparent to others. This process also removes tissue that appears dark at the edges, furthering enhancing the appearance of the treatment area.
The wedge method of labiaplasty can also be provided; this is more commonly recommended for patients with excess tissue fullness in the middle portion of the labia minora, or those who have asymmetry. The incision is placed within the natural folds of tissue; the outer edge of the labia is not affected.
Both methods have their advantages and are recommended on a case-by-case basis. Sutures placed during treatment are dissolvable and will dissipate on their own; patients do not need to have their sutures removed later. With Dr. Stephan’s attention to detail, patients benefit from comfortable treatment and optimal results.

What are the Complications of Labia Reduction?
All surgical procedures come with some risk, but these can be significantly reduced with Dr. Stephan’s care and expertise. During the trim treatment method, surgery can rarely create hard tissue around the incision site and decreased sensitivity of the labia minora. After a wedge labia reduction, patients may rarely experience poor wound healing. If you have any concerns about your procedure, Dr. Stephan talks openly and candidly about these during your consultation.
Our entire team is committed to your safety and well-being. Dr. Stephan is highly trained, Board-Certified, and creates the best possible results from labiaplasty.
Frequently Asked Questions about Labiaplasty
Patients generally find their recuperation period to be quite comfortable and do not have to reserve extended time off from work to recover from this procedure. After two days, patients report feeling comfortable enough to return to light daily activities. Dr. Stephan provides detailed instructions regarding which medications to take and how to ease back into normal physical activities. Patients are typically cleared to resume sexual activity and exercise routines four to six weeks after surgery.
Swelling and tenderness are to be expected. It may take several months for the swelling to recede completely. If you have concerns about your recovery, we welcome you to call our team.
While this can be a complication from treatment provided by an untrained professional, Dr. Stephan preserves tissue sensation by avoiding affecting the clitoris. On the contrary, without excess tissue from the labia in the way, patients often report enhanced pleasurable sensation after their surgery.
Labia reduction is an aesthetic procedure meant to improve the appearance of tissue and boost patients’ confidence. This treatment should not be considered a useful method to enhance natural lubrication or minimize incontinence. During a labiaplasty, external tissues are addressed only. During vaginal tightening, the treatment area is the vaginal canal and internal tissues.
Although the procedure is performed on a sensitive area of the body, it is a comfortable treatment that usually takes about an hour. During the procedure, the area is numbed with local anesthetic; however, patients generally elect to undergo light general anesthesia or conscious sedation during this operation for added comfort. The operation may be performed solely by numbing the area with local anesthetic, without additional anesthesia.
