Tummy tucks are popular body contouring procedures and for a good reason; having a firm and lean midsection is on virtually every patient’s wish list. However, different patients will benefit from different approaches to their tummy tuck. What is the Difference Between a Traditional Abdominoplasty and an Avelar Abdominoplasty?
A traditional abdominoplasty addresses excess abdominal skin and diastasis recti (widening of the abdominal muscles in the midline). However, for patient safety, the traditional abdominoplasty does not involve removing excess fat from the upper and mid abdomen via liposuction. This is because a significant amount of tissue is rearranged with the traditional abdominoplasty to tighten the abdominal muscles in the midline. Another type of tummy tuck is the Avelar abdominoplasty. This is a liposuction-based tummy tuck that does remove abdominal fat via liposuction, as well as excess skin of the mid and lower abdomen (like the traditional abdominoplasty). The Avelar abdominoplasty does not involve tightening of the abdominal muscles in the midline – which in turn makes it safe to perform liposuction of the upper and mid abdomen. An Avelar abdominoplasty is a great way to safely combine removal of excess abdominal skin and liposuction to create a lean and well-contoured midsection for individuals without significant widening of their abdominal muscles in the midline.
Am I a Candidate for an Avelar Tummy Tuck?
Because treatment is specialized, patients are carefully chosen to ensure they love their results. The key factors regarding the type of abdominoplasty that should be performed include the amount of upper and mid-abdominal fat, the extent of excess abdominal skin, and if there is widening of the abdominal muscles in the midline. In general, individuals who are relatively thin, have a significant amount of redundant abdominal skin, and have widening of the abdominal muscles in the midline (for example, after pregnancy) are best candidates for a traditional abdominoplasty with tightening of the abdominal muscles back to midline. On the other hand, individuals who have a significant amount of abdominal fat, excess abdominal skin, and little to no widening of the abdominal muscles will generally benefit most from an Avelar (liposuction-based) abdominoplasty.
The best way to determine if this procedure is right for you is to schedule a consultation with our surgeon, Dr. Brad Stephan. This provides an opportunity to discuss each of your concerns so that the best treatment plan may be created. Patients seeking an abdominoplasty after weight loss can also choose to have other skin and fat removal surgeries performed at the same time as their abdominoplasty – such as a brachioplasty or thigh lift. For post-pregnancy body contouring, Dr. Stephan can also perform a breast lift and/or augmentation at the same time as the tummy tuck as a part of a larger mommy makeover plan.
The Unique Benefits of an
Avelar Tummy Tuck
Depending on the unique patient’s situation, an Avelar abdominoplasty may provide advantages over other procedures intended to firm and tighten the abdomen. These benefits include:
Because the surgery involves both liposuction of the abdomen and removal of excess abdominal skin, the cost is less than having liposuction and then removal of excess abdominal skin performed during separate operations.
Dr. Stephan utilizes the power-assisted liposuction (PAL) system to safely and effectively remove excess abdominal fat, while preserving blood vessels that go between your abdominal wall and skin. This helps to safely create an ideal aesthetic result.
Patients do not require placement of surgical drains during an Avelar abdominoplasty. This makes the recovery process significantly more comfortable.
The Avelar Abdominoplasty Treatment Process with Dr. Stephan
Patients are provided general anesthesia before treatment begins. To start the liposuction process, Dr. Stephan makes small incisions to allow for the insertion of a cannula – a thin tube that extracts excess fat cells. At Stephan Surgical Arts, we use power-assisted liposuction (PAL) to safely create an ideal aesthetic result.
After liposuction, an incision is placed low between the hips to allow Dr. Stephan to create taught skin and trim any excess tissue. The result is a firmer midsection with reduced stretch marks. Afterwards, you will recover from anesthesia in our Cosmetic Surgery Center recovery room and will be allowed to return home the same day, under the care of a family member, nurse, or loved one.
Recovering from your Avelar Tummy Tuck
Because this procedure does not involve tightening of the abdominal muscles in the midline, the recovery process is more comfortable compared to that of a traditional tummy tuck. As with a stand-alone liposuction procedure, bruising and swelling are expected after your treatment. Dr. Stephan recommends the use of a compression garment to help with swelling and to allow the body to heal into its ideal shape. While swelling may take several weeks to resolve, patients will notice their trimmer figure after the first week. Results will continue to mature as healing progresses.
Follow all instructions provided by Dr. Stephan, including when to take medication and how long to avoid strenuous physical activity. This allows the best chance for rest, recovery, and ideal results.
