The first signs of aging often appear on our facial skin, manifesting as lines and wrinkles in prominent areas. They are typically caused over a period of years with natural expressions, such as laughing, smiling, and frowning. The easiest to way dependably reduce these lines and wrinkles, effectively turning back the clock, is Botox® in Tampa with Dr. Brad Stephan and Heather Flanagan, APRN. Do You Need Botox®? Ask us.
Unlike some of the more extensive aesthetic procedures, Botox® offers universal benefits that can be applied to patients of varying ages. These injections have traditionally been provided to patients aged 30 and up with significant facial wrinkles, but many are now seeking Botox® as prevention against the deepening of expression lines of the forehead, around the eyes, and other aspects of the face. Patients in their 20s often receive Botox® to look their best, and to make sure they keep looking their best as they age.
Dr. Stephan recommends treatment for patients who are in good health and are concerned about the signs of facial aging caused by dynamic movement – i.e. using muscles to frown, smile, and furrow their brow. Both men and women seek Botox® to help them feel confident and to allow them to put their best self forward, both personally and professionally.
Who is a Good Candidate for Botox®?
These popular aesthetic injections are used for smoothing minor to moderate lines created by movement of facial muscles. It’s important to note that this is different than aesthetic aging caused by loss of skin elasticity and changes in facial fat incurred by the aging process. Botox® does not create the appearance of full and plump skin, like dermal fillers, but it will allow you to look younger by erasing lines and wrinkles. Also, Botox® will not give you a “plastic” look, which has been inappropriately portrayed in movies.
Dr. Stephan often recommends Botox® for patients experiencing the following issues:
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Lines between the browns (called “11s”)
- Crow’s feet (skin wrinkles near the eye)
- Bunny lines (scrunching lines along the sides of the nose)

How Does Botox® Work?
The active ingredient in this injectable solution is classified as a neuromodulator; it affects the muscles that are responsible for creating facial movement and temporarily relaxes them. This allows the skin to become smooth and appear youthful. We carefully apply Botox® injections, so patients look naturally rejuvenated, not over-treated.
While some muscles will be temporarily relaxed, you will still be able to express yourself and look natural doing it. Again, contrary to what you may see parodied in movies and on TV, Botox® does not freeze your entire face and prevent you from smiling or frowning.
The body naturally breaks down the components of Botox® over time, so patients will need maintenance injections to promote their results. However, this can be as few as three times a year.
