What is a Breast Lift with Implants?
A breast lift with implants is the combination of two highly popular outpatient procedures – breast lift and breast augmentation. When completed together, the procedures work in tandem to ensure improved positioning and shape of the breasts, with increased upper pole fullness.
Breast lifts with implants are particularly effective in reversing the results of aging and combatting saggy or drooping breasts. The surgery creates a more youthful, elevated, appearance to the breasts. If desired, patients can combine the procedure with a minor breast reduction to reduce breast width.
Dr. Stephan works closely with our patients to ensure that they receive the breasts of their dreams. The procedure also creates ideal areola and nipple positioning based on clients aesthetic goals.
Breast Lift with Implant Options
Depending on your unique situation, goals, and physiology, a breast lift with implants operation can have multiple variations. Dr. Stephan utilizes a number of surgical options and helps you to choose from them. Each comes with its own set of benefits depending on the degree of breast droopiness and aesthetic goals.
Each technique utilizes different incision positioning. The most common techniques are:
- “Lollipop” or Vertical lift: An incision is made around the areola, and extended vertically from the bottom of the areola toward the inframammary fold, giving this technique its “lollipop” name. This method provides beautiful results for women dealing with mild to moderate drooping, as is often experienced after pregnancy.
- Inverted T or “Anchor” lift: “Anchor” shaped incisions are placed around the areola, vertically down to the inframammary fold, as well as along the inframammary fold. This is especially effective for breasts which have sagged significantly and for reversing the effects of massive weight loss. Dr. Stephan takes great care to minimize and hide incisions.
- Peri-areolar or “Donut” or “Benelli”: Most often utilized for breasts with mild sagging or to resize the areolas. Dr. Stephan will make a circular incision fully around the areola’s outer edge.
- Crescent: By placing a crescent moon shaped incision around a portion of the areola, this technique works wonders to correct very minor sagging and for nipple repositioning.
The Types of Breast Implants
Saline implants are silastic bags which are filled with physiologic saline once they have been inserted into the body. These implants can either be placed behind the breast tissue and pectoralis major muscle or in front of the muscle.
Dr. Stephan will help determine which placement is best for you. Generally, women with less breast tissue, or who desire a more natural sloped contour for the upper breasts, place the implant beneath the pectoralis muscle. Women with more severe drooping breasts, but do not require a breast lift for maximum aesthetic results, may be best served with implants placed above the muscle.
Silicone implants generally feel more like natural tissue and often have superior long-term results compared to saline implants. Silicone implants come in a variety of sizes and cohesivities (firmness). The size, shape, and cohesivity of the implants are carefully tailored to each individual patient, dependent on the amount of overlying breast tissue and patient aesthetic desires.
Am I a good candidate?
If you are a woman whose breasts have become deflated or lower than you would like, a breast lift with implants is a great option. If your skin has stretched or you are generally unhappy with your breast appearance, we can tighten the breast skin and place it in a more youthful position.
Women who have experienced massive weight loss through diet and exercise or via surgery also may be a good fit. Often, this leads to breasts losing volume and elasticity. Weight loss may also cause sagging.
If you have developed asymmetry of the breasts, whether that be in size differential, positioning or tuberous breasts, breast lifts with implants can help.
Will there be a scar?
Any time that an incision is placed on the skin, a scar will form. However, we take great precautions to minimize and hide scarring. During the operation we use specific suturing techniques, types of suture, and dressings that take the tension off the incisions, and thus minimize any scarring. The dressings are kept in place for a specific amount of time, particular postoperative instructions are given, and products are later used to further minimize scarring. The scars normally heal extremely well, fading away to almost nothing by 6-12 months after the operation.
Are there any likely complications?
As with all surgical procedures, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding, pain, hardness of the implant, and reaction to the anesthetic. These risks are higher in smokers. Dr. Stephan takes time to explain potential complications, and answer all questions prior to the procedure.
Dr. Stephan is triple board-certified and works to ensure that complications are avoided as much as possible. He will provide the information and guidance needed for a successful healing process.
It is important to be sure that you are comfortable and fully informed before you decide to move forward with a breast augmentation with implants, and we are here to answer all questions.
How long does the procedure last?
Breast lifts with implants usually require about three hours for surgery though this time can vary depending on your personal surgical plan.
How do I prepare for surgery?
Prior to all procedures, Dr. Stephan will review any medications you are currently taking which may affect the surgery and/or recovery. There is a chance you will be asked to adjust or temporarily stop taking medications or supplements. Aspirin and aspirin products (Alka-Seltzer, Carisoprodol, Excedrin, Goody’s, Midol), as well as anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, Aleve, etc) and herbal supplements should be avoided for the seven to ten days leading up to your surgery.
Patients are also asked to stop smoking at least six weeks before surgery, as tobacco products impair the body’s healing ability. This includes nicotine chewing gums such as Nicorette.
Will I need to receive general anesthesia?
Breast lifts with implants are performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Stephan will discuss all of your options with you during your consultation.
